Smoking Cessation in the Acute Medical Unit, Hull Royal Infirmary
Abstract
Approximately 30% of the population of Hull smoke and 40 deaths a month can be attributed to smoking. Causal observation of any of the oncology, vascular, respiratory cardiology or acute medical wards will demonstrate the impact of smoking for Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. There are national guidelines stating that all patients admitted to acute trusts should be offered a very brief intervention, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and referral to an appropriate stop smoking service on admission. The acute medical unit is the admitting ward for most medical patients for the trust.
